GEORGETOWN, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team put up big numbers in a 54-3 win over Southwestern University Saturday evening in Georgetown. UMHB improved to 3-0 on the season while the Pirates fell to 1-2.
UMHB's offense came out roaring with a pair of touchdowns in the first three minutes of play.
Kyle King connected with
K.J. Miller for a 71-yard touchdown before King found
Brenton Martin for 37 yards and another UMHB score. Southwestern put together an eight-play, 58-yard drive but UMHB's defense held, forcing a Southwestern field goal.
Josh Patteson ran back an interception for six more points on the Pirates' next possession, giving the Cru a 20-3 lead after the first quarter.
The Cru added three more scores in the second quarter off a pair of
Kyle King rushes and a 19-yard pass from King to
K.J. Miller. UMHB held the Pirates to just three first downs in the first half of action and only 85 total yards of offense.
Patteson forced a Southwestern fumble on the first play in the second half with a recovery from UMHB's
Tristan Green. UMHB went 28 yards in three plays on that drive, capped by a six-yard touchdown punch from
Aphonso Thomas. UMHB's defense forced another turnover on the Pirates' next possession when
Chaka Watson intercepted a pass in the endzone.
Tommy Bowden scored the Cru's final touchdown in the contest with an 84-yard run to open the fourth quarter.
UMHB totaled 569 yards of offense in the win. King threw 11-18 with 246 yards and three touchdowns. He added six rushes for 41 yards and two touchdowns. Bowden was UMHB's leading rusher with 91 yards and a score while
Aphonso Thomas went 67 yards with one score.
K.J. Miller led Cru receivers with seven catches for 139 yards and two touchdowns.
Aaron Sims had two catches for 62 yards with
Brenton Martin adding 56 receiving yards and a score.
Defense was dominant for the Cru as UMHB held the Pirates to just seven first downs and 145 total yards of offense. Patteson led with one forced fumble and a pick six.
Omari Frazier led the Cru with six tackles and two tackles for loss while
Jacob Mueller added six tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss.
UMHB returns to action on Saturday, September 25
th in a 6 p.m. contest against Hardin-Simmons University at Crusader Stadium in Belton.
