JACKSON, Miss. – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team swept Belhaven University 3-0 Thursday afternoon to open the 2021 season at 1-0 overall and 1-0 in American Southwest Conference action.
UMHB beat the Blazers 25-13, 25-15, 25-11 to earn the season-opening win.
Hannah Frasca led UMHB's offense with eight kills in the match. Frasca hit .467 against the Blazers with just one error in 15 attacks.
Kayla Janikula added six kills while
Sarah Grace Merry tallied five. UMHB totaled 29 kills as a team, hitting .300 in the match.
Alli Pierce was UMHB's assist leader with 21while Frasca served a team-high three aces. Frasca also led UMHB's defense with nine digs while Pierce and
Maddie Gillispie each added five. Janikula was UMHB's defensive leader at the net, putting down three solo blocks. UMHB limited the Blazers to just 21 kills for a -.056 percentage in the match.
"Today was a good start for us," head coach
Mark Pryor said. "We were able to finish quickly and save a lot of energy for our upcoming matches this weekend. For the most part, we played really low error and that helped us pull away."
UMHB plays four more matches in Mississippi that Pryor tagged as "progressively more difficult." The Cru plays a pair of matches at Millsaps College tomorrow before returning to Belhaven for two more on Sunday. UMHB opens the home slate on Friday, September 10
th in a 6 p.m. match against East Texas Baptist University at the Mayborn Campus Center in Belton.
