Volleyball beats Schreiner in three

KERRVILLE, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team earned another win on the road Tuesday evening in Kerrville, beating Schreiner University 3-0 in a non-conference match. UMHB improved to 11-0 on the season while the Mountaineers fell to 1-4. 
 
UMHB opened the first set with a 7-3 run before the Mountaineers cut the lead to one point. UMHB used a 6-0 run halfway through to gain a seven-point lead. Both teams exchanged runs but the Cru finished off the set with a 6-0 stand, winning the first set 25-15. The second set played closely with neither team leading by more than three points before the Cru constructed a 7-2 run to lead by six. UMHB finished with another run, scoring five unanswered points for a 25-15 second set win. ­The third set went back-and-forth but UMHB finished off the Mountaineers with a 4-1 run to win the set 25-20.
 
"A road win is a road win," Head Coach Mark Pryor said. "I think we were good in some areas, but we definitely were not very sharp."
 
Kylie Metcalf lead the Cru with 12 kills while Kayla Janikula added eight and Hannah Frasca had six. UMHB totaled 35 kills on 110 attacks for a .218 percentage in the match. Alli Pierce led the Cru with 33 assists and three service aces. UMHB's defensive efforts were led by Alyssa Christiansen with 17 total digs. Frasca added 12 digs while Maddie Gillispie added 11 en route to a team-total 62. UMHB also recorded five blocks in the match, limiting the Mountaineers to a .069 hitting percentage in the contest.
 
"We will get home, rest, recover and review what we can do better," Pryor added. "Concordia [Texas] will be here Friday and they pose a couple difficult schematic issues that we have to be ready for."
 
UMHB and the Tornados face off in a 6 p.m. match on Friday, September 24th at the Mayborn Campus Center in Belton.
