RICHARDSON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team earned an 85-72 win over the University of Texas at Dallas Sunday afternoon in Richardson. The win improved the Cru to 16-2 on the season with an 11-2 American Southwest Conference record. The Comets fell to 12-6 overall and 8-5 in league play.
The Comets jumped to a 5-0 lead early before the Cru took a one-point lead with a three-pointer from
Carson Hammond and a trio of foul shots from
Kyle Wright. UT Dallas took another lead with a three-pointer from Hunter Stevens just seconds later. UMHB tied the contest three times but did not lead again until
Josiah Johnson anchored a 13-2 run with nine points UMHB held on to a lead through the rest of the half with Johnson hitting a three-pointer with two seconds left to put the Cru up by 11.
UMHB held on to a double-digit lead throughout the second half, leading by as many as 31 points. Johnson led the Cru with 26 points and nine rebounds while
Ty Prince added 15 points and
Luke Feely had five rebounds. UMHB shot 42.3 percent from the field and 85 percent from the free throw line, making eight three-pointers. The Cru scored 26 points off 21 UTD turnovers with 28 points in the paint and 17 second-chance points.
UT Dallas shot 42.9 percent in the contest with 10 three-pointers and 14 foul shots. The Comets scored 24 points in the paint with 43 points coming from the bench.
UMHB returns to action on Monday, February 7
th in a 6 p.m. contest at LeTourneau University in Longview.
