CLARKSVILLE, Arkansas – The UMHB baseball team hit their way to a game three, run-rule victory over the University of the Ozarks, 16-6. The victory moves the Crusaders to 5-6 overall and 4-5 in American Southwest Conference play. The Ozarks loss drops them to 4-6 overall and 4-5 in the ASC.
UMHB got the bats going in the top of the first inning on a solo homerun by
Malek Bolin and a two-run homer by
Hayden Guerin. The Eagles responded with an RBI double by Alex Ray to make it a 3-1 ballgame. A
Drake Herrera homerun in the second inning and an RBI single by
Staton Dudley in the fourth made it a 5-1 Cru advantage. Ozarks responded in the fifth inning with a homerun and an RBI double, making the score 5-3. In the sixth frame, Herrera hit another homerun that scored Dudley as well,
Sam Muniga hit an RBI double off the left field wall, and Bolin hit an RBI single to make the score 9-3. The Ozarks were able to scratch one run back in the seventh inning on an RBI groundout, but the Cru were able to respond with a seven-run eighth inning. A couple of errors in the eighth allowed two Crusaders to score, and four consecutive singles by Guerin,
Warren Sammons,
Rhett Grosz, and Dudley scored five runs to give UMHB a 16-4 lead. A two-run homer by Dru Didway made it a 16-6 ballgame, but the Cru were able to stop it there and take home the run-rule victory. Dudley led the Cru with 4 hits on the afternoon and Bolin added 3 more to the 15-hit total for UMHB.
Alex Palczewski started on the mound for UMHB and earned the win (1-0) throwing 4.2 innings giving up 3 runs on 5 hits in the contest.
Trevor Ripke came in relief and threw 3 innings giving up 3 runs on 6 hits, and
Cameron Bogan relieved Ripke to get the final out for the Cru. On the mound for Ozarks was Grant Cross who threw 3.1 innings giving up 5 runs on 3 hits and surrendered the loss (1-1). Kris Sloan came in relief for the Eagles giving up 3 runs on 5 hits in 2.1 innings of work. Joshua Ropple relieved Sloan and threw 2 innings and gave up 7 runs on 5 hits. Zackary Brizendine was the final pitcher for the Eagles as he threw 0.1 innings and gave up 1 run on 2 hits.
The Crusaders continue their season with a non-conference series against Austin College March 11th- 12th in Belton, Texas.
