Men’s Basketball claims road win over UT Dallas

RICHARDSON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team defeated UT Dallas 99-93 Saturday afternoon. The Cru improved to 10-4 overall and 5-3 in American Southwest Conference play while the Comets fell to 11-3 on the season and 6-1 in league play.
 
UMHB opened play with a 9-3 run led by Nathan Stolz with six points. The Comets responded with back-to-back three-pointers to bring the contest within three points at the 13-minute mark. The Cru capitalized on foul shots to pull away, taking an advantage as big as 12 with nine minutes remaining. UTD fought back with seven unanswered points to cut the gap to five with 6:24 on the clock. The Comets continued to fight, claiming their first lead 41-40 on a Hunter Stevens layup in the final minute of the half. Josiah Johnson answered with a three-point play before the Comets knotted up the contest 43-43 on a last second layup to end the half.
 
The Comets took the first score of the half before the Cru went on an 11-3 run to take a six-point lead. UTD answered with a four-point run followed by a six-point run to retake advantage with 13:42 on the clock. The Cru responded with a trio of baskets behind the arc to go ahead by six. UMHB held the advantage until the 7:50 mark when UTD used back-to-back three-pointers to knot-it up 74-74.
 
The contest saw two more even scores before the Cru used a 12-3 run, led by Prince with six, to hold a seven-point lead with two minutes on the clock. The Comets tried to fight back, bringing the game as close as four, but UMHB held on claiming the 99-93 victory.
 
Ty Prince led the Cru with 31 points while Josiah Johnson added 19. UMHB shot 57.7 percent from the field with 20 points off turnovers. The Cru forced 17 turnovers including nine steals, led by Johnson with two. UMHB recorded 24 rebounds, led by Johnson with five followed by Prince and Gibson Hearne with four each.
 
UMHB returns to action Thursday, January 12th in a 7:30 p.m. contest against Hardin-Simmons University in Belton.
