Women’s Soccer closes regular-season with win over Concordia Texas

BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's soccer team closed out the regular season with a 2-1 win over Concordia University Texas Saturday evening in Belton. The win guaranteed the Cru the lone regular-season title for the second consecutive year. UMHB improved to 15-0-1 on the year and 7-0-1 in American Southwest Conference action while the Tornados fell to 2-6-8 overall and 1-3-4 in league play.
 
UMHB outshot the Tornados 9-6 in the first half, putting six total shots on frame. Ashley Vensel and Jayme Dowell each recorded three shots while three other Crusaders added one each.
 
Ashley Vensel put the Cru on the board in the 58th minute, finishing off a ricocheted shot from Mackenzie Worthy for a 1-0 lead. Maren Fields added an insurance goal for the Cru in the 65th minute, heading in a corner kick from Peyton Floyd for a two-goal margin.
 
Peyton Matthews cut the gap in the 84th minute, sailing a shot into the top right corner of the goal. The Tornados had another solid chance just a minute later but UMHB thwarted the opportunity and forced the shot wide, staying on top for the 2-1 win.
 
Jayme Dowell led the Cru with five shots while Vensel added four. UMHB totaled 18 shots in the contest, putting 11 on frame. The Cru allowed 14 shots in the contest with just seven on goal. Reagan Williams earned the win in the net for UMHB, allowing one goal with six saves while Lora Tresco took the loss for the Tornados, giving up two goals with nine saves.
 
UMHB returns to action as the No. 1 seed in the 2023 American Southwest Conference Women's Soccer Championship Tournament. The Cru earned a first-round bye and will open postseason play in a 5 p.m. match on Thursday, November 2nd.
