MARSHALL, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team dropped its season opener to Trinity University Saturday evening in Marshall.
UMHB jumped to an 8-3 lead in the first quarter and held the lead through the frame, going into the second quarter up 16-13.
Trinity cut the gap in the second frame with a layup from Maggie Robbins and took its first lead of the game with a layup from Elaine King. Ashley Faux responded with a layup to put the Cru back on top with 8:39 to play. Lauren Baker extended the gap with a three-pointer at 8:01 before Kaitlyn Kollmorgen hit a pair of foul shots to put the Cru up by six. UMHB led by as many as nine in the frame before Trinity used a trio of consecutive three-pointers to tie the contest at 30. Jamie Ruede followed that with a three-pointer with 33 seconds left to give the Tigers a one-point lead at the half.
Lauren Baker put the Cru back on top with a three-pointer to open the third quarter before Trinity tied the frame 12 seconds later. UMHB went up again and held the high ground through the quarter, going into the final frame up by 10 points.
The fourth quarter played scoreless until the 8:18 mark when Trinity University went on a 13-0 run to take a lead at 61-58. UMHB cut the gap to one but the Tigers hit a trio of three pointers to go back up by seven. Trinity extended the lead to 15 with 1:08 to play and held on, winning the game 84-74.
Kaitlyn Kollmorgen led the Cru with 20 points scored while Lauren Baker added 16 and Arieona Rosborough put up 12. UMHB shot 38 percent in the contest with 27 field goals and eight three-pointers. Kollmorgen also led the Cru with nine rebounds while Baker added six assists.
The Cru continues action on Sunday, November 12th in a 3 p.m. contest against Rhodes College on the campus of East Texas Baptist University in Marshall.
