SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team fell 83-64 to Trinity University (Texas) Tuesday evening in San Antonio. The Cru fell to 2-3 overall while the Tigers improved to 5-0 on the season.
The Tigers jumped to a 12-0 lead before
Maurice Pinnock and
Eli Beard each added a score to put the Cru on the board. UMHB used an eight-point run, led by Beard with six points to cut the gap to three at the 10:52 mark.
Kyle Wright added a jumper before the Tigers tacked on two layups to extend their lead to 26-18.
The contest continued basket-for-basket until UMHB scored five fast-break points from Wright and
Payton Brooks to bring the game within two at the 0:37 mark. The Cru held Trinity in the final seconds, closing the half down 35-33.
Beard led UMHB through the first half with 13 points while Pinnock added seven. The Cru defense forced 15 turnovers on the Tigers, including seven steals.
Trinity opened the second half with a quick layup to bring their lead back to four.
LD Butler responded with a layup to make it a one possession game. The Tigers used a 9-1 run to extend the margin to 10 at the 15:49 mark. UMHB capitalized on free throws to bring the game within three with 14 minutes remaining.
The Tigers took back the momentum, going on an eight-point run to go ahead by 10 at the 11:58 mark. A layup from
Ryan Pondant broke the Cru's scoring drought and sparked a seven-point run to cut the gap 59-55. Beard tacked on seven more points to knot-up the game 62-62. Trinity closed the game with an 18-point run to secure the 83-64 lead.
Beard led the Cru with 22 points and four assists, while Pinnock added 10 points. UMHB scored 28 points in the paint and 19 off turnovers. The Cru totaled 33 rebounds, led by
Josiah Johnson with seven.
UMHB returns to action on Saturday, December 2
nd in the American Southwest Conference opener at Concordia University Texas in Austin. The UMHB women will tip off at 1:00 p.m. with the men to follow.
