ALPINE, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team earned a 74-55 win over Sul Ross State University Saturday afternoon in Alpine. The win improved the Cru to 9-1 overall while the Lobos fell to 3-7 on the season.
Jaycie Brisco opened scoring with a pair of foul shots 38 seconds into the contest for a 2-0 UMHB lead.
Ashley Faux followed that with two more free throws to extend the gap before
Alexis Carmosino hit a jumper for a six-point margin. Cheyanne Bonilla responded for the Lobos, hitting a jumper at 7:49 to get Sul Ross State on the board. SRSU cut the gap to two three times but UMHB responded each time to hold the four-point lead. The Lobos scored once more in the final 3:55 of action to cut the gap to two again, sending the contest into the second frame with a 12-10 UMHB lead.
Sul Ross State quickly tied the game at the open of the second quarter and eventually took a lead with a pair of foul shots at the 6:25 mark. The Lobos led by as many as six points, but UMHB responded with a pair of jumpers from Carmosino and a layup from
Lauren Baker to knot the game at 20. SRSU made a quick layup to retake the high ground but
Josie Bruder drained a three-pointer with 57 seconds to play to put the Cru back on top. Bruder and Baker both made baskets in the final 38 seconds of the quarter to extend the lead to five as UMHB's defense held the Lobos scoreless for the final 1:45 of the first half.
Arieona Rosborough opened the third quarter with seven straight points after going scoreless in the first half. UMHB held at least a five-point lead through the quarter, going up by 10 with 1:35 to play off a pair of Rosborough free throws. Both Rosborough and
Ashley Faux scored a duo of points in the final 1:10 of the quarter, giving UMHB a 12-point margin headed into the final frame.
UMHB opened the fourth quarter on a four-point run and maintained a substantial double-digit lead through quarter. The Cru went ahead by 22 points at 2:34 and cruised to a 74-55 win from there.
Rosborough led the Cru with 21 points, scoring all 21 in the second half of action. Rosborough went 9-9 from the foul line and added seven rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals.
Lauren Baker added 17 points with seven rebounds and three steals while
Kaitlyn Kollmorgen brought down a team-high 12 boards.
Alexis Carmosino also scored in double-digits with 15, adding nine rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block.
UMHB returns to action next week in a pair of matches in New York City. The Cru opened with a 1 p.m. (ET) contest against Berry College on Tuesday, December 19
th before facing Millsaps College on Wednesday, December 20
th at 1:00 p.m. (ET).
