Basketball closes season in NCAA Round of 16

NEWPORT NEWS, Virginia – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Men's Basketball team fell to Christopher Newport University 72-60 in the NCAA Round of 16 Friday night in Newport News, Virginia. The Captains improved to a 27-3 record overall while the Cru closed their season with a 23-6 mark.
 
UMHB jumped to a quick 6-2 lead with a pair of three-pointers from Nathan Stolz to open the game. The Captains answered with a trio of baskets behind the arc to claim their first lead at 11-8. CNU extended that lead to 12 at the 9:55 mark after a 12-1 run. The Cru cut the gap down to four after five unanswered points from Stolz with four minutes to go in the first half. Christopher Newport responded with a pair of three pointers to extend their lead to nine. The contest played scoreless for the final 1:24 of the opening half, giving the Captains a 36-25 lead going into the break.
 
UMHB opened the second half with a 9-3 run to knock the margin down to five. The contest proceeded basket-for-basket until the Captains scored seven unanswered points to go up by 11 at the 9:07 mark. CNU continued on a 9-2 run to bring their lead to 16. Ty Prince recorded a trio of layups followed by a basket behind the arc to cut the gap to eight with 2:02 left on the clock. The Captains capitalized on free throws in the final 1:30 to secure their 72-60 victory.
 
UMHB was led by Prince with 33 points, shooting 56.5 from the field, followed by Stolz with 15. The Cru offense was anchored by Kyle Wright with five assists and Josiah Johnson with four. Prince, Johnson and Luke Feely all recorded six rebounds on the night.
 
UMHB closed their season averaging 83.4 points a game while shooting 48.4% from the field. The Cru led the American Southwest Conference in free throw percentage (.764) and team steals (297) this season. Christopher Newport advances to the Round of 8, facing Wheaton College Saturday night in Newport News.
