Baseball outscores McMurry

ABILENE, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Baseball team defeated McMurry University 13-9 Friday evening in Abilene.
 
The War Hawks opened scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a sacrifice flyout to take a one-run lead. UMHB put themselves on top in the next frame, scoring both Hayden Guerin and Robert McCall on an error.  
 
UMHB extended that lead with a seven-run third inning. Tyler Betts scored first, reaching on an RBI single from McCall. Hayden Guerin tripled in the next at-bat to bring home McCall, Hunter Jones and Kaden deBerardinis. After a Rhett Grosz walk, Carson Hagan singled to score Guerin before Sam Muniga singled, scoring Hagan and Grosz for a 9-1 UMHB lead.
 
UMHB added one more score in the fourth inning when deBerardinis scored on a Guerin single. The War Hawks cut the gap with three runs in the fourth inning before the Cru recorded their 11th score of the game in the top of the seventh when deBerardinis used a sacrifice bunt to bring Muniga home. The War Hawks cut the gap to two in the bottom of that same inning with a three-run homerun. UMHB tacked on two more insurance in the eighth frame with scores from Grosz and Guerin on a triple from Hagan. Nicklas Fenner used three strikeouts in the final inning to secure the 13-9 victory.
 
Andrew Acierni earned the win for the Cru, pitching five innings with six strikeouts. UMHB recorded 12 hits in the contest, led by Grosz with three. Hayden Guerin was the team leader with three runs and four RBI.
 
UMHB returns to action Saturday, March 18th in a doubleheader against McMurry starting at noon in Abilene.
