ABILENE, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team split a doubleheader with McMurry University Saturday afternoon in Abilene. The War Hawks took the first contest 16-9 before the Cru run-ruled them 13-3 in the second game.
McMurry opened game one with five runs between the first two innings. The Cru put their first two runs on the board in the top of the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly from
Hunter Jones to score
Kaden deBerardinis followed by an RBI single from
Carson Hagan to bring in
Hayden Guerin. McMurry responded with three more runs in that same inning, increasing their lead to 9-2. UMHB added one more in the fifth when
Rhett Grosz hit-in Jones before the War Hawks added five more in the bottom of that frame.
The Cru continued scoring in the next frame with a run by Hagan on an error followed by a two RBI single from Jones to score deBerardinis and
Sam Muniga. McMurry added their final runs in the bottom of the sixth inning with a two RBI single to center field. UMHB tried to rally back in the top of the seventh adding scores from Guerin, Grosz and Muniga, but were unable to overcome the deficit, falling 16-9.
Rahul Champaneri started on the mound for UMHB, taking the loss after pitching three innings. He allowed four earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts. Bryson Morrill earned the win for the War Hawks, throwing 4.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits. The Cru totaled 11 hits in the contest, led by Jones with two hits and three RBI.
UMHB opened game two with a bang, scoring seven runs in the first inning, including six on a two-out rally. Guerin opened scoring with a single to score
Tyler Betts. Jones was next to score on a Grosz single up the middle. The Cru added two more runs, one on a bases-loaded walk and another on an error. Hagan brought the lead to five on the next play, scoring on a wild pitch. UMHB concluded their first-inning scoring with a two RBI single by Betts to score
Drake Herrera and Muniga.
The War Hawks got on the board during the bottom of the first inning with a sacrifice fly. The Cru responded with a Guerin score in the next frame on an RBI single from
Robert McCall. UMHB followed that up in the third with a Guerin RBI single to score deBerardinis. McMurry cut the Cru's lead to 9-2 in the bottom of the inning, scoring on a wild pitch. During the next frame, UMHB added three more insurance runs on a three-run homerun by deBerardinis.
McMurry recorded their final run of the day in the bottom of the fifth inning with an RBI single to left field. The Cru tacked on one more score in the top of the seventh inning with a second deBerardinis homerun to secure the 13-3 victory.
James McGlumphy claimed the win for UMHB, throwing five innings with six strikeouts. He allowed two earned runs on six hits.
Bryce Farlander closed the game for the Cru, pitching two innings with four hits allowed. Jonathan Enriquez took the loss for the War Hawks after allowing four earned runs on nine hits in just 2.2 innings. UMHB outhit McMurry 13-10, led by deBerardinis with three hits and four RBI.
UMHB returns to action Tuesday, March 21
st in a contest against Texas Lutheran University at 6 p.m. in Seguin.
