MARSHALL, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team dropped a doubleheader to East Texas Baptist University Saturday afternoon in Marshall.
UMHB had a strong opener in the first game, hitting back-to-back home runs for a 2-0 Cru lead. The Tigers added a run in the bottom of that frame but
Robert McCall doubled to score
Kaden deBerardinis in the third to extend the margin back to two runs. The Tigers fought back, scoring two more runs in the fourth inning to even the game before putting it away with 10 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for a 13-3 win.
deBerardinis, Guerin and McCall all recorded hits in the contest while deBerardinis led the team with two runs scored. UMHB threw four pitchers in the game with
Nicklas Fenner taking the loss. Fenner gave up four runs on three hits in his outing.
Rahul Champaneri opened the game, throwing five innings with six hits and three runs allowed. Champaneri added four strikeouts with just one walk.
Bryce Farlander and
JD Gerda also made mound appearances.
Rhett Grosz opened the second game with a Crusader lead, scoring off an RBI from
Hunter Jones.
Blake Harmon added another run for the Cru in the second inning before ETBU went off for six runs in the bottom of the second. The Tigers added eight more runs in the next three frames before UMHB got another run on an RBI from
Carson Myers.
Blake Harmon opened the Cru's seventh-inning offense with a solo home run before
Carson Hagan scored on an error to bring the deficit back to single digits. Erick Rodriguez also scored on a passed ball, giving UMHB six runs to the Tigers' 14 after six and a half innings. ETBU added one more run in the seventh inning to earn a 15-6 win.
Grosz led the Cru with three hits and two runs while Erick Rodriguez had two hits and
Blake Harmon scored two runs. Five pitchers combined on the mound for the Cru with 10 strikeouts and just six walks.
UMHB returns to action on Tuesday, March 28
th in a 7:00 p.m. contest at Trinity University in San Antonio.
