GEORGETOWN, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team used a ninth-inning rally to earn an 8-6 win over No. 24 Southwestern University Tuesday evening in Georgetown. The win improved the Cru to 10-15 on the season while the Pirates suffered their second loss to UMHB, falling to 20-6.
Southwestern opened the game with a three-run first inning to take an early lead. UMHB fought back, evening the game in the top of the third.
Drake Herrera and
Tyler Betts hit back-to-back singles before both scoring on an error.
Hunter Jones followed that hitting in
Rhett Grosz for the equalizer. UMHB took its first lead of the contest in the next frame, scoring
Carson Hagan off an RBI single from
Elijah Rodriguez.
Alex Palczewski and
Jacob Haynes combined for scoreless frames in the fourth and fifth before the Pirates scored the tying run off an RBI single in the sixth.
Erick Roberts entered the game on the mound for the Cru in the seventh inning, pitching a shutout in that frame before throwing a perfect inning in the eighth. UMHB rallied in the ninth inning to take an 8-4 lead.
Blake Harmon opened the inning with a single and advanced to second on a walk from Dudley.
Drake Herrera moved up both runners with a sacrifice bunt before Betts doubled to score them for a 6-4 lead.
Kaden deBerardinis was the next batter and reached on an intentional walk before a double-steal placed him and Betts in scoring position. Grosz scored Betts with a sacrifice fly before Jones singled to score deBerardinis for the 8-4 margin.
Southwestern threatened in the bottom of that frame, loading the bases with just one out.
Reid Cromie entered and allowed one run before striking out the next batter for the second out. Southwestern added another run on a passed ball but a groundout to third base gave UMHB the 8-6 win.
Betts and Jones led the Cru with three hits each while Betts also led the Cru with two runs and two RBI. Five Crusaders combined on the mound for UMHB. Palczewski and Cromie were the two pitchers to throw shutouts while Roberts earned the win with one hit and two runs allowed. UMHB totaled eight runs on 10 hits with no errors while the Pirates had six runs on nine hits with one error.
The win marked the Cru's second consecutive over the Pirates this season after spoiling Southwestern's 11-game win streak last week. UMHB returns to action on Friday, April 14
th in a 6 p.m. contest against UT Dallas at Red Murff Field in Belton. The Cru will close out that series in a 12 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, April 15
th.
