ABILENE, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team earned a 14-1 win over Hardin-Simmons University Friday evening in Abilene.
UMHB jumped to a quick lead with a three-run first inning.
Tyler Betts scored on an error after stealing third base followed by a
Hunter Jones single to bring home
Rhett Grosz and
Hayden Guerin.
Blake Harmon extended the Cru's lead to four in the next frame with a homerun over the left field wall.
The Cowboys got on the board in the bottom of the second inning with a sacrifice flyout to cut the lead 4-1. UMHB responded with three perfect innings before tacking on another run in the seventh frame with a sacrifice fly from Grosz to score Betts. The Cru increased the gap 7-1 in the eighth when Jones scored on an error followed by an
Elijah Rodriguez single to bring
Carson Hagan home.
UMHB kept pushing forward with a seven-run ninth inning. Guerin kicked off the scoring with an RBI single to left field before scoring himself on an error two plays later. During the next at-bat Hagan recorded an RBI, scoring
Tyler Martin making it a 10-1 contest. Harmon doubled to score
Drake Herrera followed by a Rodriguez run on a wild pitch. UMHB secure their 14-1 victory with an RBI double by
Kaden deBerardinis to bring in Betts and Harmon.
Bryce Farlander (1-1) claimed the win for the Cru, pitching the first seven innings. He allowed just three hits with five strikeouts.
Erick Roberts and
Jacob Haynes also made an appearance, throwing one inning each. Livingston took the loss for the Cowboys, pitching seven innings, allowing five runs on eight hits. UMHB outhit the Cowboys 16-5, led by Harmon with three hits, two RBI and two runs scored.
UMHB returns to action Friday, April 6
th in a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. to close the series in Abilene.
