BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team earned a 3-0 sweep over Hardin-Simmons University Friday evening in Belton. The Cru improved to 12-1 on the season and 2-1 in American Southwest Conference action while the Cowgirls fell to 6-5 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
UMHB took a 4-1 lead to start the match, but the Cowgirls went on a six-point run to take the lead 8-5. The Cru fought back, reclaiming the lead 13-12 after back-to-back blocks from Cameron Pesek and Natalie Hughes. The contest remained close, seeing four tied scores before UMHB pulled away with five unanswered points to go up by three. UMHB held the high ground and took set one 25-22.
Second-set action remained within one point until UMHB went on a 5-1 run to go ahead 10-6. The Cru brought their lead to seven before the Cowgirls started to chip away, bringing the contest within two points at 17-15. UMHB only allowed the Cowgirls three more points and cruised to a 25-18 win.
UMHB opened the third set with four unanswered points. The Cowgirls used a three point run to tie it up 8-8. HSU held a short lead after scoring four unanswered points. The Cru used a 4-1 run to retake the lead 14-13. The contest played point-for-point until UMHB used a final 6-1 run to finish the sweep with a 25-21 victory.
Katie Warden led the Cru with 16 kills, finishing with a .577 hitting percentage. Hannah Frasca added 11 kills to UMHB's total 41 kills. Defensively, Frasca and Faith Clark led UMHB with eight digs each.
UMHB returns to action on Saturday, September 23rd in a 1 p.m. contest against McMurry University at the Mayborn Campus Center in Belton.
