BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team earned its 11th sweep of the 2023 season in a 3-0 win over McMurry University Saturday afternoon in Belton. The win improved the Cru to 13-1 on the season and 3-1 in American Southwest Conference action while the War Hawks fell to 1-12 overall and 0-3 in league play.
UMHB opened the first set with a 4-1 lead before the War Hawks tied the contest at five. The Cru used a four-point run to retake the lead and then used a 9-1 run to pull away, earning a 25-18 win in the first set.
The Cru pulled away early in the second, taking a 8-5 lead and continued to distance. UMHB led by as many as eight points in the set and secured the win at 25-19.
McMurry took a 3-2 lead in the third but the Cru fought back for a 5-3 margin. UMHB led by five toward the end of the set but the War Hawks fought back, pulling within one point. Hannah Frasca put the Cru up by two before McMurry scored the next point to keep the margin at one. A pair of Katie Warden kills and an attack error by the War Hawks gave UMHB a 23-18 lead before Warden hit two more kills to secure the 25-21 win.
Katie Warden led the Cru with 11 kills, hitting .320 in the contest. Natalie Hughes added nine kills to UMHB's 37 total count. Kendall Harrington totaled 29 assists in the contest as UMHB hit .196 as a team. Harrington also served five aces while Sam Sommerfeld and Faith Clark each added three. Defensively, Hannah Frasca led the Cru with 19 digs, followed by Caden Lasala with nine. UMHB limited the War Hawks to just 32 total kills on 111 attacks in the contest. The Cru also had eight total blocks in the game, led by Warden, Hughes and Emily Millikan with four each.
UMHB returns to play on Tuesday, September 26th in a 6 p.m. contest at Concordia University Texas in Austin.
