Women’s Basketball falls to East Texas Baptist

MARSHALL, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team fell to East Texas Baptist 79-47 on the road Thursday evening in Marshall. The Cru fell to 16-2 on the season and 9-1 in American Southwest Conference action while the Tigers improved to 8-11 overall and 5-6 in league play.
 
The first quarter played scoreless until the 7:59 mark when Josie Bruder hit a jumper for the Cru for a two-point margin. Ashley Faux extended that lead with a layup at 7:10 before Michaela James gave the Tigers a lead with back-to-back three-pointers at 6:55 and 5:33. Remi Adeleke evened it for the Cru at 5:51 but the Tigers pulled ahead again, ending the quarter with a 16-9 lead.
 
Jaycie Brisco jump started a 7-0 run for the Cru at the 8:56 mark in the second quarter as UMHB retook the lead off an Alexis Carmosino layup at 7:54. Tristan Smith hit a pair of foul shots to put the Tigers back on top before another Michaela James three-pointer extended the ETBU lead to five points. UMHB held the game within five points until just before the media timeout when ETBU went ahead by seven off a layup from Payton  Hicks. UMHB cut the gap to one possession again but ETBU continued to pull away, going into the half up 40-29.
 
ETBU used a strong third quarter to pull away from the Cru, allowing just five total points in the frame. The Tigers scored 16 points in the period, shooting 30 percent from the field and limiting the Cru to a 7.1 shooting percentage. Jaycie Brisco opened the quarter with a jumper before the Tigers scored six unanswered points. Remi Adeleke added a foul shot at 5:51 before the Tigers scored seven more unanswered points, thwarted by a pair of foul shots from Katelen Brooks.
 
UMHB entered the fourth quarter down 56-34. Alexis Carmosino scored five points in the first 90 seconds of the frame before Lauren Baker scored off a layup at the 8:21 mark. The Tigers continued to score, going ahead by as many as 22 points early in the quarter and holding that gap through regulation for the 79-47 win.
 
Alexis Carmosino led the Cru with 11 points while Jaycie Brisco added 10. UMHB shot 28.4 percent in the contest with 19 field goals. Lauren Baker led the Cru with seven rebounds while Carmosino added a team-high two assists. Brisco and Ashley Faux each added two steals while Faux also added both of the Cru's blocks.
 
UMHB returns to action on Saturday, January 27th in a 1 p.m. contest at LeTourneau University in Longview.
