LONGVIEW, Texas - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor's men's basketball team fell to LeTourneau University in overtime 93-92 Saturday afternoon in Longview. The Cru fell to 9-9 overall and 5-6 in American Southwest Conference play while the YellowJackets improved to 12-8 on the season and 7-5 in ASC action.
UMHB opened the contest with two foul shots from
Eli Beard before LeTourneau took the lead with a three-pointer. The game saw 12 lead changes before a
Connor Zamiara layup at the 10:09 mark sparked a 12-point run to take a nine-point lead for the Cru. Action continued basket-for-basket until the YellowJackets scored nine unanswered points to cut the gap to two with 0:45 on the clock. Zamiara sunk two more free throws in the final seconds to go into the half ahead 44-40.
Josiah Johnson led the Cru through the first half with 16 points and three rebounds while Beard added 15 points.
LD Butler also added three boards to UMHB's 17 total rebounds.
The YellowJackets reclaimed the lead to open the second half with a five-point run. The Cru responded with a 9-3 run, led by Johnson with seven to go up by five. UMHB held a steady lead until the 11:46 mark when LeTourneau went back on top with nine consecutive points. UMHB knotted-it up 67-67 at the 8:14 mark. The contest saw two more even scores before the Cru used a seven-point run to go up 78-72 at the 4:01 mark. LeTourneau brought it back within two before going on a 6-2 run to tie-it up 85-85 on free throws in the final seconds to go into overtime.
Beard hit a layup to bring the Cru up 87-85 before the YellowJackets went on an eight-point run, led by Jackson Mayes with a pair of three-pointers. Johnson answered with a three-pointer followed by a Beard layup to cut the gap to one with 0:26 left. UMHB could not overcome the deficit, falling 93-92.
Johnson led the Cru with 33 points, while Beard added 30. Johnson, Beard and Butler led UMHB in rebounds with six each. The Cru totaled 38 points in the paint and added 13 points on fast breaks.
UMHB returns to action Thursday, February 1
st in a 7:30 p.m. contest against Sul Ross State University in Belton.
