Volleyball roars back for win over Howard Payne

BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team overcame a first-set loss to take a 3-1 win over Howard Payne University Saturday afternoon in Brownwood. The win improved the Cru to 18-4 overall and 3-3 in American Southwest Conference while the Yellow Jackets fell to 9-7 overall and 0-5 in league play.
 
UMHB jumped to an early 6-2 lead in the first set but the Yellow Jackets responded with a 7-1 run to take a 9-7 lead. UMHB fought back and played within three points before tying the set at 15 but the Yellow Jackets constructed a 9-1 run to win the first set 25-17.
 
The Cru opened the second set firing on all cylinders, cruising to a 10-0 lead. Kendall Harrington led the Cru with four kills in the run while Natalie Hughes added two. A service error broke the streak for the Cru but they held the high ground until the Yellow Jackets started chipping away, using a pair of three-point runs to cut the gap to four points. UMHB scored twice more before Howard Payne went on a seven-point run to take a 23-22 lead. Both teams scored two points to put the Yellow Jackets up 25-24 but the Cru responded with a pair of kills from Hughes and a block from Hughes and Peyton Sedlacek to earn the 27-25 win.
 
Set three played back and forth with the Cru leading by as many as five points early. UMHB stayed on top by at least three through the set, cruising to the 25-20 victory. The fourth set continued in back-to-back action before UMHB constructed a 6-2 run to go ahead by two and followed with three unanswered points to take a four-point margin. The Cru closed the set on a 4-2 run to earn another 25-20 win and the 3-1 match victory.
 
Kendall Harrington and Baylee Mobley led the Cru with 13 kills each while Hughes added 11. UMHB hit .259 in the match with 59 total kills. Caitlyn Ellenburg anchored the offense with 25 assists, followed by Harrington with 22. Defensively, Caiden Lasala recorded 13 digs with Faith Clark adding 12 and Baylee Mobley adding 11.
 
UMHB returns to home action next weekend. The Cru will face ETBU on Friday, October 18th before a Saturday matchup against LeTourneau.
