Men’s Basketball earns come-from-behind win over Heidelberg

ANGOLA, Indiana – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team earned a strong come-from-behind win over Heidelberg University Saturday afternoon in Angola. The win moved the Cru to 1-1 on the season while Heidelberg also moved to 1-1.
 
Josh Goings opened the game with a jumper, followed by a pair of field goals from Eli Beard and a layup from Zachary Engels to put the Cru ahead 8-0. Heidelberg got on the board at the 17:01 mark but the Cru stayed on top, leading by as many as 12 points before HU used a 16-0 run to take a four-point lead. B.J. Anderson ended the drought with a three-pointer, cutting the lead to one. The game played back-and-forth from there with four lead changes before Heidelberg regained the high ground and kept it, holding on for a 36-30 lead after the first half of action.
 
UMHB cut the gap to four to open the second half but Heidelberg responded with five consecutive points for a 41-32 lead. Josh Goings hit a jumper to end the run and another after a pair of HU free throws to keep the Cru in the game. Eli Beard scored at 16:36 to cut the lead to five points. The half played scoreless for nearly two minutes before Riley Gossom hit a three-pointer to put HU on top by ten points. UMHB kept chipping away, cutting the lead to just two with 12:23 to play.
 
Heidelberg stayed on top, using an 8-0 run to go up by nine but the Cru continued to fight, cutting the gap back down to three before B.J. Anderson hit a three-pointer to even the game at 65.
 
HU went back ahead, taking a four-point lead at 5:27. Zachary Engels hit a pair of free throws to cut the gap to two before Beard made a jumper to knot the game at 69. Beard followed with the go-ahead basket at 3:54 before Heidelberg quickly tied it and got back on top with a pair of foul shots. The game played basket-for-basket with a 75-75 tie with 44 seconds to play. Zach Engels hit a jumper at 00:31 to put the Cru on top by two and Eli Beard finished off the win with two free throws for the 79-75 victory.
 
Beard led the Cru with 27 points while Zachary Engels added 18. Josh Goings and B.J. Anderson also added double-digit scoring with 13 points and 10 points, respectively. UMHB shot 50.8 percent in the contest with 31 field goals. The Cru added seven shots beyond the arc, led by Anderson with three. Goings added a team-high nine rebounds with seven assists in the win with Beard and Anderson each putting up three steals. Beard also recorded a double-double with 10 assists in the matchup. 
 
UMHB scored 38 points in the paint and 26 points off turnovers. The Cru added 16 fast break points with seven second-chance points and nine points from the bench. The game saw eight lead changes with five tied scores.
 
UMHB returns to action on Thursday, November 14th in a 7:30 p.m. contest at Concordia University Texas in Austin.
