SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team opened the 2024-25 season with a 58-45 win over Trinity University Saturday evening in San Antonio. The win opened the Cru at 1-0 on the season while the Tigers open at 0-1.
Josie Bruder hit a game-opening three to put the Cru on top. UMHB held the high ground for the majority of the first quarter until Trinity's Jailyn Martin evened the contest at 15 with a tip in. Trinity followed with a pair of layups to go ahead by four before
Amillion Fowler made a free throw to cut the gap back to three. Ivory Scott ended the first quarter with another layup for Trinity to put the Tigers on top 21-16 after the first frame.
Trinity held onto the high ground in the second quarter, leading by as many as 10 points early. The Tigers held a nine-point lead with 4:16 to play until a drought hit both teams and the game went scoreless until 00:34 when
Sakeena Gordon made a layup for the Cru. Both teams added buckets to close the frame, ending the half with Trinity leading 33-27.
Bruder opened the second half with a layup and back-to-back three-pointers to cut Trinity's lead to just four with 6:37 to play. The quarter went scoreless from there until the 3:45 mark when
Adyson James made back-to-back layups to dwindle the margin to just one.
Jaycie Brisco hit a pair of foul shots to put the Cru on top before
Karlee Cronk added some distance with another free throw.
Adyson James added a layup for a four-point margin but Trinity responded, cutting the gap to one off a three-pointer with 41 seconds to play. Bruder added a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left to give the Cru a three-point lead going into the fourth.
UMHB extended the lead to six early in the fourth quarter and did not allow Trinity any points until the 5:15 mark.
Adyson James hit another layup with 3:56 to play and UMHB maintained a double-digit lead through the majority of the fourth, ending with a 58-45 victory.
Bruder led the Cru with 18 points while
Adyson James added 14. UMHB shot 32.3 percent in the contest with 21 field goals. Bruder added 10 rebounds in her double-double while
Jaycie Briscoe added nine.
Amillion Fowler was the assist leader with three while
Adyson James added four steals and Brisco put up two blocks.
UMHB returns to action on Friday, November 15
th in a 5:30 p.m. contest at Southwestern University in Georgetown.
