SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team swept Trinity University 8-0, 2-1 Tuesday in San Antonio, giving Head Coach
Melissa Mojica her 100
th career win with the Cru.
UMHB jumped to an early lead in the first game, taking a two-run margin after the first frame.
Taylor Henken scored first, reaching on a single from
Bailey Frenzel before
Lindsey Polleschultz crossed home on a sacrifice fly from
Allyse Castillo.
UMHB added one more run in the third when Polleschultz hit in Henken. The Cru added a duo of third-inning runs from
Shorey Nguyen and
Chloe Cox before
Madeline Stephenson jumpstarted a three-run fourth inning for the run-rule win. Stephenson doubled to score Polleschultz before
Bralyn Belk and
Tori Skinner hit back-to-back RBI singles for the 8-0 victory.
Henken and Polleschultz led the Cru with two runs each while Henken and Belk each added two runs. Castillo and Skinner both drove in a team-high two RBI as UMHB totaled eight runs on nine hits.
Eileigh Whyte earned the win in the circle for the Cru, pitching five shutout innings. Whyte gave up just five hits in the contest with four strikeouts in 21 batters faced.
The second game played scoreless until the fourth inning when
Madeline Stephenson scored
Taylor Henken with a single to left centerfield. UMHB extended that lead in the next frame with an RBI single from
Gabriela Vela that scored
Kyler Sanders.
Chloe Mason pitched a no-hitter until the third batter of the seventh inning when Sydney Boudreaux hit a blooper to right field to break the no-hitter and cut the Cru's lead to just one run. Mason ended the contest on the next at-bat, sealing UMHB's 2-1 win.
Six different Crusaders recorded hits in the contest with Stephenson and Vela each putting down RBI. Mason earned the win in the circle, throwing a full seven innings with just one hit and one run allowed. Mason struck out six batters in 23 batters faced, throwing just 92 total pitches in the victory.
UMHB returns to action on Friday, March 15
th in a 2 p.m. doubleheader against Howard Payne University in Belton. The Cru will close that series on Saturday, March 16
th in a 2 p.m. single game.
