BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team completed a three-game sweep of LeTourneau University with a 2-0 win over the YellowJackets Friday afternoon in Belton. The win improved the Cru to 11-11 on the season and 5-7 in American Southwest Conference action while the YellowJackets moved to 12-11 and 5-4 in league play.
The game played scoreless until the bottom of the third inning when the Cru strung together a scoring offense.
Taylor Henken reached on an error before
Lindsey Polleschultz singled to advance her to second.
Bailey Frenzel followed that with a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners before
Madeline Stephenson hit them in with a double to left field.
Eileigh Whyte continued her dominance in the circle, throwing perfect frames in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Whyte did not allow a hit in the contest until the seventh inning when the Yellow Jackets put a base runner on first. LeTourneau put just one runner in scoring position on the day.
"I knew I just had to jam them and do the best that I could," Whyte said. "This is going to really help us going into next week with Hardin-Simmons."
Whyte earned the win, throwing seven shutout innings with just one hit allowed. She struck out four of 23 batters faced in the win.
Madeline Stephenson led the Cru with two hits in the contest while three other Crusaders added one. Stephenson also drove in both of the Cru's RBI. UMHB totaled two runs on five hits while the Yellow Jackets added one hit with one error.
UMHB returns to action next weekend in a three-game series at Hardin-Simmons University. The Cru opens the series in a 4 p.m. doubleheader on Friday, April 5
th.
