Softball sweeps doubleheader over Ozarks

CLARKSVILLE, Arkansas - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team swept a doubleheader against University of the Ozarks Friday evening in Clarksville. The Cru improved to 18-12 overall and 12-8 in American Southwest Conference action while the Eagles fell to 7-26 on the season and 2-15 in ASC play.

UMHB scored quick in game one with a sacrifice flyout from Bailey Frenzel to bring Lindsey Polleschultz home for the 1-0 lead. The Cru added two more in the next frame on an RBI single from Allyse Castillo to score Taylor Henken before Castillo scored on an error.

The Eagles cut the gap to two with a homerun in the fourth inning. UMHB used a perfect fifth frame to continue to hold Ozarks before adding a final insurance run on a Frenzel single to left to score Polleschultz for the 4-1 win.

Eileigh Whyte (12-5) earned the win for UMHB, pitching five innings with just one run on three hits with six strikeouts. Ella Gamblin threw relief for the Cru, earning a save after pitching two innings with just two hits allowed. UMHB recorded eight hits, led by Polleschultz and Henken with two.

UMHB scored first again in game two with a Frenzel sacrifice flyout to drive in Polleschultz in the first frame. The Cru added a second score in the top of the second with an RBI single from Shorey Nguyen to bring Bralyn Belk home.

The Eagles answered in the bottom of the second, tying the contest 2-2 with a duo of singles. The knot did not last long when an RBI single from Frenzel scored Polleschultz to take a 3-2 lead in the third. UMHB added two more runs in the frame on a Kaitlin Powers run on an error followed by a Henken RBI single to score Belk.

The Cru continued scoring in the fourth on a Frenzel RBI double to bring in Polleschultz. UMHB expanded the gap 9-2 in the sixth when Kylie Green scored on a wild pitch. In a final stitch effort, the Eagles recorded an RBI single up the middle, but could not overcome the deficit, falling 9-3.

UMHB returns to action Saturday, April 20th at 11:00 a.m. to close the three-game series against University of the Ozarks in Clarksville.
