BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team earned a 73-54 win over UC Santa Cruz Friday afternoon in Belton. The win improved the Cru to 9-4 on the season while the Banana Slugs fell to 5-13.
UCSC jumped to a quick 8-2 lead before
Katelen Brooks tallied nine points in under two minutes to put the Cru up 13-8. UMHB held that lead extending the gap to seven with a 21-14 lead after the first quarter.
UMHB opened the second quarter with another jumper before the Banana Slugs hit a streak that cut the gap to just four. The Cru answered with a jumper from
Adyson James and three-pointer from Brooks for a nine-point margin, extending the lead to ten off a three-pointer from Bruder. UMHB held at least a two-possession lead through the remainder of the frame, going into halftime ahead 35-26.
James opened the third quarter with a jumper for a double-digit Cru margin and UMHB held the lead with both teams scoring 11 points in the frame. UMHB closed out the game outscoring the Banana Slugs 27-17 for the 73-54 win. UCSC cut the gap to seven early but back-to-back jumpers from Brooks put the Cru back on top by 11. UMHB did not drop to a singles lead again, going ahead by 20 with 1:20 left and cruising on to the 19-point win.
Brooks led the Cru with a career-high 25 points while
Josie Bruder added 15,
Adyson James had 12 and
Jaycie Brisco put up 10. Brisco also led the Cru with seven rebounds while Okoye added five. Okoye also put up a team-high seven assists while
Keziah Bachert added two steals.
The Cru returns to action on Monday, January 6
th in a 5:30 p.m. contest at Concordia University Texas in Austin.
