Women’s Basketball earns road win at Concordia Texas

AUSTIN, Texas - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team earned a 74-56 win over Concordia University Texas Monday evening in Austin. The win improved the Cru to 11-4 on the season while the Tornados fell to 5-4 overall. 

The first quarter played back and forth until the Cru used a 6-0 run to take a four-point lead on the Tornados. Concordia Texas answered with a layup but Amillion Fowler answered to keep the margin at four. The frame toggled between two and four points for the duration with neither team scoring in the final 1:37, ending the first with a 14-12 Concordia Texas lead. 

The Tornados held the high ground until a free throw from Adyson James evened the contest 30 seconds into the second quarter. Karlee Cronk put the Cru on top with back-to-back foul shots before CTX answered and jumped back ahead. Rachel Okoye answered for the Tornados, hitting a three-pointer at 7:55 followed by layups at 7:02 and 6:20 for a six-point lead. UMHB led by as many as nine in the frame, ending the first half up 34-27. 

The Cru came out firing in the third quarter, quickly taking a double-digit margin. Katelen Brooks hit a jumper at 9:52, followed by a Josie Bruder three-pointer at 9:21 and a three-pointer from Brooks at 8:20. Adyson James answered with a pair of foul shots, followed by another jumper from Brooks, a free throw from Bruder and a Brooks three-pointer for a 23-point Cru lead. UMHB's defense held the Tornados scoreless until the 5:52 mark in the frame. The Cru maintained at least a 20-point lead for the majority of the quarter and went into the fourth up 60-40. 

The Tornados outscored the Cru 16-14 in the final frame, cutting the win to 18 points in a 74-56 UMHB win. 

Brooks led the Cru with 25 points while Rachel Okoye added 15 and Josie Bruder put up 10. Bruder was also the Cru's rebound leader with eight, followed by Amillion Fowler and Karlee Cronk with seven each. Okoye led UMHB with six assists in the contest. The Cru shot 41.8 percent in the contest with 32 points in the paint, 14 points off turnovers and 16 fast break points. 

UMHB returns to action on Thursday, January 16th in a 5:30 p.m. contest at the University of Texas at Dallas.
