Men’s Soccer edges Hardin-Simmons

BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's soccer team earned a 1-0 win over Hardin-Simmons University Saturday night in Belton. The win improved the Cru to 10-1-2 on the season and 3-0 in American Southwest Conference action while the Cowboys fell to 3-7-1 overall and 0-2-1 in league play.
 
UMHB outshot the Cowboys 5-1 in the first half, putting two shots on frame. Neither team was able to score until the 50th minute when Yannis Benae found the low center of the goal off an assist from Aidan Aguilera-Reeves.
 
Both teams pressed in the second half but neither was able to score again, ending the game in a 1-0 Cru win. The Cowboys got a free kick with 15 seconds remaining and pulled everyone in but UMHB held them off, ending the game. Benae led the Cru with three shots while seven other Crusaders each added one. UMHB put five of 10 shots on frame and limited the Cowboys to just six shots on goal.
 
Brett LaPorte earned the win in the net, playing a full 90-minute contest. LaPorte made six saves in the shutout, facing 10 total shots.
 
UMHB returns to action on Wednesday, October 15th in a 7 p.m. contest at Southwestern University in Georgetown.
