Softball splits series at UT Dallas

RICHARDSON, Texas - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team earned one win and one loss in a doubleheader against UT Dallas on Friday evening. This moves the Cru's season record to 11-3, while the Comets sit at 5-3.
 
Shorey Nguyen tallied the first hit of the night with a single to left, advancing to second with a stolen base but was left on to end the half inning. Chloee Miller got the start in the circle, opening the game with two strikeouts and a scoreless first inning. The Crusaders and Comets added one double each in inning two but the score remained knotted at zero.
 
The game stayed scoreless through the end of the third. In the top of the fourth inning Bailey Frenzel got on with a single up the middle. Ava Jolley entered the game to pinch run for Frenzel, immediately stealing second base. Kylie Hoggatt advanced Jolley to third on a ground out before Tori Skinner earned an RBI on a single to left field to take the Cru up 1-0. The Comets came out swinging in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four runs on six hits taking the lead 4-1. The Crusaders were unable to cut into the lead, dropping the first game of the doubleheader.
 
Tori Skinner led the Cru with two hits on the night in three plate appearances, tallying the Cru's lone RBI. Shorey Nguyen, Bailey Frenzel, and Gabriela Vela also added one hit each. Nguyen, Ava Jolley, and Skinner each had a stolen base. Chloee Miller got the loss for UMHB, going 5.1 innings with two strikeouts and three earned runs allowed. Beth Ann Johnston came in for relief, pitching 0.2 innings.
 
Game two played scoreless through the first three innings. The Cru had a breakthrough inning in the fourth to open scoring. Bailey Frenzel led off with a solo home run to kickstart the inning, followed by a Tori Skinner double to put her in scoring position. Madeline Stephenson laid down a sacrifice bunt, but a throwing error by the third basemen allowed her to advance to second, scoring Skinner. Victoria Shimabukuro went up to bat and pushed a single up the middle to score Stephenson and add an RBI on the night. Eileigh Whyte pitched a three-up, three-down inning in the bottom of the fourth to hold the 3-0 lead.
 
Bailey Frenzel drew a walk to get on in the top of the fifth, advancing to second on a passed ball. Ava Jolley entered to pinch run for Frenzel followed by a Tori Skinner walk to put runners at first and second. Both Jolley and Skinner stole bases to put them both in scoring position. Madeline Stephenson stepped to the plate and singled through the left side to score Jolley, making it a 4-0 ball game. Whyte followed, pitching another shut out inning to keep the Comets scoreless.
 
In the top of the sixth frame, Shorey Nguyen scored Gabriela Vela and loaded the bases just in time for Bailey Frenzel to walk to the plate and add another homerun, clearing the bases for a grand slam, improving UMHB's lead to 9-0. The Cru didn't stop there, adding another run off a Bryton Wright RBI single to score Skinner who got on with a single down the first base line making the score 10-0. The Comets followed adding four runs to cut into UMHB's lead off five hits. In the top of the final inning, Shorey Nguyen added an infield single to third, before Frenzel got on due to a throwing error. Skinner came up and hit a single to left, scoring Nguyen to extend the lead 11-4. Bryton Wright came in to close out the game in the circle, striking out three batters to secure the Cru's 11-4 win.
 
Bailey Frenzel had two home runs on the night, one a grand slam, to give her 5 RBI. Tori Skinner followed with three hits in four plate appearances with a double and an RBI. Shorey Nguyen and Vic Shimabukuro each added two hits of their own. Eileigh Whyte earned the win for the Cru, going 5.2 innings allowing only two earned runs with two strikeouts. Bryton Wright entered the circle in relief pitching one complete inning, striking out three.
 
UMHB returns to action in San Antonio on March 14th in a 4:00 PM doubleheader against the University of Rochester on the campus of Trinity University.
