BELTON, Texas - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's soccer team earned a 3-1 win in the season opener Friday night in Belton. The Cru opens the season at 1-0 while the Mountaineers start with an 0-1 mark.
Martin Valdez gave UMHB an early lead, scoring off a double-assist from
Michael Myers and
Caple Esquivel for a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute. UMHB outshot the Cru 5-1 in the first half, putting three shots on frame.
Bhodey Miller scored the equalizer for the Mountaineers in the 63
rd minute, finding the lower right corner of the goal.
Rhett Rapuzzi responded for the Cru, hitting the left side off an assist from Martin Valdez for a 2-1 UMHB lead.
Dylan Vadnais added an insurance goal three minutes later, scoring off another assist from Esquivel.
UMHB held off the Mountaineers to secure the 3-1 victory. The Cru totaled 17 shots, putting 11 on frame and limiting Schreiner to just three total shots.
Arnold Perez-Valenzuela Jr. led the Cru with four shots while
Jackson Whitley and
Aidan Aguilera-Reeves each added three.
Mack Elliott gave up one goal and made one save in the win.
UMHB returns to action in a 6 p.m. contest against Texas Lutheran University on Saturday, August 30
th at the UMHB Soccer Field in Belton.
