MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's soccer earned a 3-2 victory against Rhodes College Wednesday afternoon in Memphis. This win improves the Cru's record to 6-1-2 on the season, while the Lynx' fall to 2-3-2.
In the 13th minute of play, Yannis Benae scored the opening goal with a low right shot off an assist from Alex Bethke to give the Cru a 1-0 lead. The Lynx' answered in the 35th minute, scoring the equalizer to move the game to 1-1. Rhett Rapuzzi attempted the go-ahead goal with eight seconds left in the half, but was denied in the net.
Just two minutes after kickoff in the second frame, Jackson Whitley gave the Cru the upper hand with an unassisted goal. Rhodes added three shots in a row, highlighted by a save from UMHB goalkeeper Hughston Taggart, before scoring to knot the game back up at two in the 56th minute. The Cru defense held down the Lynx, not allowing any shots until Evan Ruiz got his chance to score the game-winning goal in the 65th minute. Taggart added two more saves to seal the 3-2 Cru victory.
Karsen Macias led the Cru in shots on goal, adding two, with seven other Crusaders adding one each. Hughston Taggart played all 90 minutes in the net, adding a career-high seven saves.
UMHB returns to action at home on Saturday, September 27th in a 7:30 pm conference opener against Howard Payne University.
