Volleyball falls to Hardin-Simmons

ABILENE, Texas- The University of Mary-Hardin Baylor volleyball team fought hard but fell to Hardin-Simmons University in a 1-3 away match loss. The loss dropped the Cru to 10-4 on the season while the Cowgirls improved to 11-3 overall with a 2-1 American Southwest Conference record.

The first set began with a five-point run from the Hardin-Simmons Cowgirls to put the score at 5-0. A kill from Crusader Natalie Hughes helped the Cru lessen the Cowgirl's lead at 13-8, but a nine-point run from HSU gave the Cowgirls a 22-8 lead late in the set. The Crusaders fought, but an HSU kill secured the Cowgirls 25-9 first-set win.

The second set began with back-and-forth points from both teams to tie the set at 9-9. Kills from Crusaders Peyton Sedlacek and Hughes gave UMHB the lead at 11-8, but the Cowgirls fought back to take the lead once again at 15-14. A kill from Crusader Baylee Mobley set the Cru up for a seven-point run, giving them the lead back 21-15. HSU kept the set close, but a kill from the Cru sealed the set two win at 25-19.

The third set began with runs from both teams to make the set a tied game at 7-7. HSU went on a three-point run to give them the lead at 10-7. The set remained close with both teams gaining points, but the Cowgirls held onto their lead at 20-13. A series of kills from the Cru gave them momentum to tie the set at 22-22, but HSU finished with a 3-1 run to secure the 25-23 third-set victory.

Set four began with a series of points from both teams to tie the set at 5-5. A service ace from Crusader Angie Garcia opened a three-point run for the Cru, giving them an 8-5 lead. A series of back-and-forth points led to a close 21-20 set with HSU now in the lead. The Crusaders battled hard, but a kill from the Cowgirls sealed the set win at 25-20 and the match at 3-1.

Baylee Mobley and Natalie Hughes led the Cru with 12 kills each while Peyton Sedlacek followed with 1. Kendall Harrington tallied 38 assists for the match.

Defensively, Angie Garcia led the team in digs with 13. Kendall Harrington and Baylee Mobley each added 11 digs while Hughes and Harrington both added three blocks.

UMHB returns to action on Friday, October 3rd in a pair of matches at Huntingdon College in Montgomery.
