BELTON, Texas – University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball dropped a heated one-point decision to Concordia University Texas Saturday in Belton. The game went down to the final minute with a last-second foul but officials called the contest, ending the game in a 92-91 Tornado win.
UMHB opened the game with a 12-1 lead, led by
Hudson Johnson with six points. The Tornados fought back, tying the contest at 12 with 12:41 on the clock and CTX's first lead at 16-14. The game toggled in back-and-forth play from there before the Tornados used an eight-point run to go ahead 31-23.
Donta Coady answered for the Cru, draining a three-pointer before a layup and foul shot pulled the Cru back within three.
Concordia Texas gained a double-digit margin at the 4:13 mark after a pair of free throws but UMHB fought back, cutting the gap to five with 3:04 to play. The Tornados stayed on top, going into the half with a 53-40 lead.
UMHB shot 35.3 percent in the first half, making three shots beyond the arc and bringing down 30 rebounds.
The Cru trailed by 18 with 14:21 to play but fought back, scoring seven unanswered to cut the gap to 12 at 13:00. A three-pointer from
Elijah Lawrence at 11:47 cut the margin to single digits but the Tornados answered with a foul shot and layup to extend the lead to 12.
Back-to-back threes from
Hudson Johnson and
Elijah Lawrence cut the gap down to six with 4:58 to play. The Tornados went back up by eight at 4:08 but a layup from
Connor Zamiara cut the lead back to six. Concordia Texas answered with two free throws, followed by a three-pointer from
Hudson Johnson for a five-point margin. Jumpers on both ends brought the score to 91-86 with 1:09 to play. Lawrence drained a three-pointer off a pass from Johnson for a two-point game with 59 seconds to play.
Tremayne Martin made one free throw but a rebound from Johnson on the ensuing miss gave UMHB the ball. Johnson drove down the court, making a layup with 20.4 seconds to play and a one-point Tornados lead. UMHB forced a turnover and got fouled near the buzzer but officials determined that foul occurred after time expired, ending the contest in a 92-91 Concordia win.
Johnson finished with 34 points, while Lawrence added 14,
Donta Coady had 13 and
Connor Zamiara recorded 12. Coady also brought down a team-high 11 rebounds while Johnson and Lawrence each added four assists.
UMHB returns to action on Monday, January 5
th in a 7 p.m. contest against LeTourneau University at the Mayborn Campus Center in Belton.
