BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team set a program record for three-pointers en route to a 90-65 win over Howard Payne University Saturday in Belton.
UMHB set the tone early, hitting three consecutive three-pointers for a 9-3 lead at the 7:54 mark. Howard Payne pulled within one and tied the game at 10 but UMHB answered with another three. The Yellow Jackets tied the score again before the Cru went on an eight-point streak, taking a seven-point lead. UMHB closed the first quarter with back-to-back threes from
Katelen Brooks, taking a 27-17 lead into the second frame.
The Cru hit two more three-pointers in the first minute of the second and extended the lead to 15 off a
Josie Bruder three at 7:52.
Mia Lozoya and Brooks hit two more from beyond the arc before a pair of foul shots from
Amillion Fowler gave the Cru a 44-21 lead.
Danae Gonzalez answered with another three, putting the Cru ahead by 25. UMHB held at least a 20-point lead through the remainder of the quarter, taking a 51-27 lead into halftime. UMHB made a total of 14 consecutive three-pointers in the first half, setting a new NCAA Division III record for consecutive threes in a game.
Mia Lozoya went four-for-four from beyond the arc while
Katelen Brooks added four threes as the Cru tied the Division III program record for three-pointers in a game with 14, all in the first half.
UMHB led by as many as 29 points in the third quarter and held at least a 19-point advantage through the fourth, sealing the 90-65 UMHB win.
Josie Bruder led the Cru with 18 points, followed by Lozoya with 17 and Brooks with 16.
Danae Gonzalez also finished in double-digits with 10 points. UMHB finished the game with a program-record 19 three-pointers, led by Lozoya with five total.
Karlee Cronk led the team with eight rebounds while Fowler and Gonzalez each had four assists. UMHB shot 55.9 percent from beyond the arc, going 8-for-9 in the first quarter.
