SAINT PETER, Minn. – University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball fell to No. 7 Gustavus Adolphus 90-72 Saturday night in Saint Peter. The loss ends the Cru's season in the NCAA Second Round while the Gusties advance to the Round of 16.
The first half played back and forth with four tied scores in the first four minutes. The Gusties went ahead by two, but a
Hudson Johnson three gave the Cru a one-point lead. Eli Wolff answered for GA, making back-to-back three-pointers for a five-point margin.
Grant Jessen answered with a layup at 14:40, followed by a
Zach Engels layup at 12:13 to cut the gap down to one.
Johnson made a three-pointer at 10:14 for a 19-17 UMHB lead but the Gusties quickly tied it at 19.
Cam Stinson made shots at 9:24, 8:21 and 7:59, putting the Cru ahead by six with 7:59 to play in the first half. Lawrence struck next, hitting a three-pointer at 7:05 for a 29-20 Cru margin. UMHB extended the lead to double-digits off a
Cam Stinson free throw at 5:54 and went ahead by 13 off a
Donta Coady dunk at 5:31.
UMHB led by as many as 18 points in the half but the Gusties fought back late, pulling within eight at the end of the first half. Johnson led the Cru with 14 points while Stinson added nine and Lawrence had seven. UMHB shot 45.7 percent in the first half with a 34.8 percent showing from beyond the arc.
The Gusties cut the gap to four with 18:02 to play and down to two at 17:45. The Cru held the close lead with Johnson scoring five consecutive points to give the Cru a seven-point margin. Gustavus Adolphus cut the margin down to four and took the lead at 10:58 with a three-pointer from Jake Schmitt. The Gusties pulled away, taking a seven-point lead with 7:44 left in the game. UMHB later cut the lead to five off a
Donta Coady three-pointer at 4:51 but the Gusties answered again taking a double-digit lead at 3:42 and cruising to a 90-72 win.
Hudson Johnson led the Cru with 24 points, followed by
Cam Stinson with 14,
Grant Jessen with 11 and
Zach Engels with 11. Jessen had a team-high eight rebounds while Johnson added four assists.
UMHB ends their first season under head coach
Sam Patterson at 21-8, winning the ASC regular-season and conference titles.
