Women's basketball beats Trinity 82-62 in home opener

Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team took control of the game midway through the first half and the Cru women never looked back on the way to an 82-62 victory over Trinity University Tuesday evening in Belton. The UMHB women improve to 2-1 on the season with the victory. The loss drops Trinity to 1-2 on the year.
            UMHB led 13-10 at the 16:15 mark of the first half before exploding for a 10-0 run to take a 23-10 lead with 14:04 left in the half. Trinity would not get closer than 10 points the rest of the period as the Cru stretched the lead to as many as 23 points before settling for a 52-33 halftime lead. UMHB would take the lead to 30 points at 66-36 five minutes into the second half before a late Trinity run would cut it down to the final margin of 20.

            Lindsay Eaton was dominant for the Cru, pouring in a career-high 34 points. She also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds in the victory. Brittany Zamora and Jenny Black added 13 points apiece for UMHB and Miranda Shorter came off the bench to chip in with 10. The Cru shot 48 per cent from the field, including 56 per cent in the first half. UMHB also hit 8-14 three-pointers in the first half and went 17-24 from the free-throw line.

            Danielle Hubenak led the Tigers with 20 points on 7-11 shooting. Abby Dietert also reached double figures with 14 points. Trinity shot 41 per cent from the field and went 7-16 from three-point range. The Tigers also turned the ball over 24 times.

            The Cru will open American Southwest Conference play with a 5:30 PM tip-off at East Texas Baptist University Monday in Marshall. UMHB will then return home to host LeTourneau University and U.T.-Tyler next Thursday and Saturday.
