Marshall, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team fought back from an early eight-point deficit and the Cru dominated the second half on the way to a 79-61 victory over East Texas Baptist University Monday evening in Marshall. The Cru women improve to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in American Southwest Conference play with their third straight victory. The loss drops ETBU to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the ASC on the season.
East Texas Baptist opened the game with an 8-0 run before UMHB finally scored at the 16:58 mark. The Lady Tigers would push the lead to 10-2 before the Cru used a 10-0 run to take its first lead of the game at 12-10. UMHB would then lead by as many as six points before settling for a 32-28 halftime lead. The Cru scored the first four points of the second half to open an eight-point lead. ETBU would not get closer than four points the rest of the way as the Cru pushed the lead to many as 13 points. ETBU would cut the lead to nine points with 3:48 left in the game, but UMHB scored the game's final nine points to put it out of reach.
Jenny Black and
Landie Thompson led the Cru with 14 points apiece. Black hit 5-9 from the field and Thompson added six rebounds.
Brittany Zamora and
Caitlin Barganier added 12 points apiece and Barganier went 4-5 from the field.
Lindsay Eaton had 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds for UMHB. The Cru out rebounded the Tigers 41-34 and forced 18 turnovers. UMHB also went 8-19 from three-point range and hit 17-21 from the free-throw line.
Brandace Latin had 18 points to top ETBU. Emily Leek-Roberson added 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds for the Tigers. ETBU shot 44 percent from the field and the Tigers were 5-14 from beyond the arc.
The Cru women will now return home to host a pair of ASC games this weekend. UMHB will welcome LeTourneau University to the Mayborn Campus Center for a 5:30 PM start on Thursday before closing out the week with a 1:00 PM tip-off against U.T.-Tyler on Saturday.
