Women's basketball tops Southwestern 68-59

Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team built a big second-half lead and then held off a late Southwestern charge as the Cru women posted a 68-59 victory over the Pirates Saturday afternoon in Belton. The UMHB women improve to 6-1 on the season with the win and the Cru has now won six straight games. The loss drops Southwestern to 6-1 on the year.
            Southwestern opened the game with a 6-2 run before the Cru scored the next five points to take the lead at 7-6. The Pirates would never lead again and Caitlin Barganier's three-pointer with 22 seconds left in the first half would give UMHB a 33-22 edge at the break. The Cru would stretch the lead to 18 points at 45-27 with 15:09 left in the game before the Pirates started to chip away. Southwestern cut the gap to six points at 52-46 with 5:45 remaining in the game. UMHB then scored the next five points to push the lead back into double figures and the Pirates would not get closer than seven points the rest of the way.

            Landie Thompson led the Cru with 17 points and 15 rebounds. Brittany Zamora added 16 points, six rebounds and four assists for UMHB. Barganier and Jenny Black chipped in with nine points apiece as the Cru played without leading scorer and rebounder Lindsay Eaton who missed the game with an illness.

            Shae Seagraves led Southwestern with 16 points and she also grabbed seven rebounds. Staley Mullins and Anna Fareed added 11 points apiece and Chelsea Leeder also reached double figures with 10 points.

            UMHB out rebounded the Pirates 42-32 in the win. The Cru shot 45 per cent from the field and went 13-20 from the free-throw line, all of those coming in the second half. Southwestern shot 37 per cent from the field and just 4-19 from three-point range.

            The Cru will now hit the road for a pair of key American Southwest Conference games next week. UMHB will open the week with a 5:30 PM tip-off at Mississippi College next Tuesday before closing out the week with a 5:30 PM start at Louisiana College on Thursday.
