Women's basketball rolls over Sul Ross State

Alpine, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team gave up the game's two first points, but the Cru would now trail again as the UMHB women rolled to a 71-42 victory over Sul Ross State Saturday in Alpine. The Cru improves to 12-7 overall and 9-6 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. The loss drops the Lobos to 0-19 overall and 0-15 in the ASC on the season.
            Sul Ross jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, but UMHB's Caitlin Bargainer drained a three-pointer to put the Cru up 3-2 and UMHB never looked back. The Cru would quickly push the lead to 19-8 and UMHB would lead 35-23 at halftime. The Cru continued to stretch it out in the second half and led by as many as 32 points before finishing with the 29-point edge.
            Landie Thompson was the only player in double figures for UMHB as she led the Cru with 17 points. Jovana Miles added a career-high nine points as 12 different players scored for the Cru. Jenny Black grabbed a team-best nine rebounds for UMHB.
            Candace Pollard led Sul Ross State with 16 points and Madalyn Lopez also reached double figures with 10 points. Lopez also had a team-best five rebounds in the game.
            UMHB shot a blistering 54 percent from the field in the victory and the Cru went 7-17 from three-point range. UMHB also out rebounded the Lobos 46-28 and held Sul Ross to 8-38 shooting from beyond the arc.
            The Cru women will now return home for a pair of ASC West Division rematches next week. UMHB will host Howard Payne University for a 5:30 PM tip-off on Thursday night before closing out next week with a 1:00 PM home game against Sul Ross State on Saturday at the Mayborn Campus Center.
