Softball opens ASC First Pitch Tournament with 14-5 win over Ozarks

Farmers Branch, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team exploded for an eight-run seventh inning to break open a tight game and the Cru opened the American Southwest Conference First Pitch Tournament with a 14-5 win over the University of the Ozarks Friday in Farmers Branch. UMHB improves to 6-3 on the season with the victory. The loss drops the Eagles to 1-6 on the year.
 
The Cru fell behind early after Ozarks put four runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning. UMHB would cut it to 4-3 on Brittany Moreno's three-run homer in the top of the second. Caitlin Bollier's RBI fielder's choice tied the game at four in the top of the fourth before Ozarks retook the lead with a run in the bottom of that frame. Sara Roman and Moreno had RBI singles in the top of the fifth to give the Cru a 6-5 lead and it would stay that way into the top of the seventh. Jordan Giesen opened the onslaught for UMHB with an RBI single, Austin McCormick followed with an RBI triple and Ashton Feight doubled home two more runs. Bollier had an RBI double and scored on an error. Laura Rodriguez and Kaysie Creech added RBI doubles for the Cru. Hannah White would then close out the Eagles in the bottom of the seventh to clinch the victory.
 
Kirstie Curry picked up the win for UMHB with two and two-thirds innings of one-hit relief pitching. White tossed one and a third hitless innings for her first save of the year. Roman was 3-4 for the Cru and Moreno added two hits and four runs batted in. Bollier, Creech, Giesen and McCormick also added two hits apiece for UMHB.
 
The Cru will close out the first day of action with a 5:30 PM game against Mississippi College. UMHB will then wrap up the tournament with games against LeTourneau University and East Texas Baptist University on Saturday.
