Brownwood, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team built an early lead and then held on for a 4-2 game two win to salvage a doubleheader split with Howard Payne University Saturday afternoon in Brownwood. The Yellow Jackets won game one 7-3 on the strength of six unearned runs in the bottom of the third inning. UMHB is now 11-8 overall and 7-1 in American Southwest Conference West Division play following the split. Howard Payne moves to 7-13 overall and 2-6 in the ASC West on the year.
UMHB scored three runs in the top of the second in game two and then held off a late rally for a 4-2 victory. Jacqui Beach singled home the first run and
Leanne Hinojosa added a two-run single to make it 3-0. Howard Payne cut it to 3-2 on a run-scoring fielder's choice and a throwing error in the bottom of the fifth. UMHB added an insurance run when
Jordan Giesen stole home in the top of the seventh inning.
Hannah White then worked her way out of a two-out, one-out jam in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the win and notch her first save of the season.
Ariel Kemmerer raised her record to 4-1 with six and a third innings of three-hit pitching. The Cru had eight hits, coming from eight different players.
The UMHB defense fell apart in the bottom of the third inning of game one, giving up six unearned runs in a 7-3 loss. White's RBI double made it 1-0 UMHB in the top of the first, but the Cru committed three errors and gave up four hits in HPU's six-run third inning.
Ashton Feight singled home two runs in the top of the fifth to close the gap to 6-3, but the Yellow Jackets added an insurance run in the bottom of that frame.
Rebekah Ragsdale took the loss despite not giving up an earned run.
Chandler Henson had two of the Cru's nine hits in the loss.
UMHB will now return home to host Texas Lutheran University for a four-game ASC West Division series next weekend. The two teams will open the series with a 4:00 PM doubleheader on Friday before closing out the weekend with a 1:00 PM double-dip on Saturday at Dee Dillon Field.
