Alpine, TX— The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team grabbed early leads in both games and then held on to win by the run rule as the Cru posted a doubleheader sweep of Sul Ross State University Friday night in Alpine. UMHB won game one 12-4 before taking the second game 14-6. The Cru improves to 16-11 overall and 12-2 in American Southwest Conference West Division play with the sweep. The Lobos fall to 4-22 overall and 1-9 in the ASC West with the two losses.
UMHB jumped out to an early 8-0 lead in game and then bounced back from a Sul Ross rally to post a 12-4 victory.
Hannah White and
Janie Neyland drove in runs as the Cru took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Caitlin Bollier's RBI single in the second made it 3-0 and UMHB added five more in the third. White's two-run single was the biggest hit of the frame. Amanda Garza's three-run triple sparked a four-run Lobo rally in the fifth to cut it to 8-4, but UMHB answered with four more in the top of the sixth.
Jordan Giesen singled home two runs and Bollier and
Kirstie Curry also drove in runs.
Rebekah Ragsdale earned the win for UMHB to move to 8-5 on the year. Bollier had two of the Cru's 11 hits in the win.
The Cru put seven runs on the board in the fifth and sixth innings to close out a 14-6 game two victory. UMHB took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first on
Ashton Feight's two-run single and Neyland's RBI single. Sul Ross cut it to 3-2 in the bottom of the first, but UMHB scored one in the second and three in the third for a 7-2 lead. The Lobos cut the lead to 7-6 with a four-run third, but the Cru erupted for seven runs in the fifth and sixth to put it out of reach. UMHB used three hits, two errors and three walks in a five-run fifth and added two more in the sixth.
Ariel Kemmerer picked up the win to improve to 5-3 on the year.
Caitlin Wells had four hits for the Cru and
Leanne Hinojosa and Feight added three hits apiece as UMHB pounded out 17 safeties in the win.
The two teams will close out the series with an 11:00 AM doubleheader tomorrow in Alpine. The Cru will then return home for a crucial four-game series with West Division leader Hardin-Simmons next week.
