Alpine, TX— The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team scored early and often in both games as the Cru rolled to a doubleheader sweep of Sul Ross State University Saturday in Alpine. UMHB pounded out a 20-0 win in game one and cruised to a 15-2 victory in game two to improve to 18-11 overall and 14-2 in American Southwest Conference play with the two victories. The Lobos drop to 4-24 overall and 1-11 in the ASC West on the year with the two losses.
The Cru jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the top of the first inning on the way to a 20-0 game one win.
Ashton Feight tripled home three runs and scored on a throwing error.
Chandler Henson and
Caitlin Wells also added two run doubles in the inning. UMHB added six more in the top of the second on just one hit. Tori Gomes drove in three runs as the Cru took advantage of two errors, two walks, a hit batter and a pair of wild pitches.
Dayton Kunz and Feight drove in runs in a two-run third to make it 19-0 and Wells singled home the final run in the top of the fourth.
Rebekah Ragsdale earned the win to move to 9-5 on the year for the Cru. Wells, Henson and
Leanne Hinojosa had two hits apiece to lead UMHB's 12-hit attack. Feight drove in six runs and Wells and Gomez drove in three each for the Cru.
UMHB broke open a tight second game with 14 runs in the final two innings in a 15-2 win.
Kaysie Creech's RBI double gave UMHB a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, before Sul Ross answered with two in the bottom of the third. The Cru seized control with a five-run fourth to grab a 6-2 lead.
Hannah White's three-run double would be the biggest hit in the inning. UMHB then put the game away with nine runs in the top of the fifth. White singled home two runs and Creech added a two-run triple as the Cru bunched seven hits along with two Lobo errors.
Ariel Kemmerer tossed an eight-hitter to raise her record to 6-3 on the season, White, Creech and
Janie Neyland had three hits apiece for UMHB and White and Creech combined to drive in eight runs in the game.
The Cru will now return home to host Hardin-Simmons in a crucial ASC West Division series next week. The two teams will open the series with a 4:00 PM doubleheader on Thursday before closing out the weekend with a noon doubleheader on Friday.
