Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team used a dramatic seventh-inning comeback to win game one, but the Cru could not carry the momentum into the second game and settled for a doubleheader split with Hardin-Simmons University Thursday evening in Belton. UMHB won game one 4-1 before falling 7-0 in game two. The Cru moves to 19-12 overall and 15-3 in American Southwest Conference West Division play on the year. Hardin-Simmons is now 20-8 overall and 13-1 in the ASC West Division on the season.
UMHB fell behind late but used a four-run seventh inning for a dramatic 4-1 win in game one. UMHB's
Rebekah Ragsdale and HSU's Blair Wallace took a pitcher's duel into the top of the seventh before the Cowgirls broke a scoreless tie. Shelby McIntyre's RBI single gave HSU a 1-0 lead, but the Cowgirls left runners on first and third. The Cru then answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame.
Caitlin Wells' one out RBI single tied the game. After a fielder's choice,
Caitlin Bollier singled to keep the inning alive.
Hannah White then ended the game with a walk-off, three-run homer to left field. Ragsdale scattered seven hits and struck out five to raise her record to 10-5. Wallace allowed nine hits and four runs to fall to 11-4. Wells had two of the Cru's nine hits. Amy Meyer and Julia Bradley had two hits apiece for Hardin-Simmons.
The Cowgirls took control of game two early and then coasted to a 7-0 win. HSU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and then took advantage of two errors and two passed balls to push the lead to 4-0 with three unearned runs in the top of the third. The Cowgirls added a single run in the fourth and two more in the sixth and the Cru could not come up with an answer.
Ariel Kemmerer took the loss to fall to 7-4 on the year despite giving up just one earned run. Sarah Shurbet tossed a three-hitter to improve to 9-4 on the year for HSU.
Ashton Feight had two of the Cru's three hits in the game. Meyer and Mac Clay had three hits apiece to lead the Cowgirls' 12-hit attack.
The two teams will close out the series with a 12:00 PM doubleheader tomorrow in Belton. UMHB will then play a four-game road series at Schreiner University next weekend in Kerrville.
