ABILENE, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's soccer team beat Hardin-Simmons University 3-1 Friday afternoon in Abilene. The Cru improved to 5-4-1 on the season and 3-2 in American Southwest Conference action while the Cowboys fell to 5-5-1 overall and 3-3 in league play.
Logan Keeler gave UMHB a 1-0 lead in the 20
th minute with an assist from
McKenna Cook. UMHB held that lead until the 47
th minute when
Ben Hammonds scored off an assist from
Case Carnes for a 2-0 lead. The Cowboys responded quickly, netting a penalty kick in the 51
st minute to cut UMHB's lead to 2-1. The Cru held that lead until the 85
th minute when
Sean Diamond assisted Carnes for the 3-1 win.
Hammonds led the Cru with four shots while
Caleb Vandergriff added three and Keeler recorded two. UMHB outshot the Cowboys 12-10 in the match, putting seven shots on goal to the Cowboys five.
Javier Zaragoza earned the win in the goal for UMHB, allowing one goal and making four saves. Michael Vargas took the loss for HSU, allowing three goals and making four saves.
UMHB returns to play Saturday, October 10
th in a 7 p.m. match at McMurry University in Abilene.
