BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor fell short 59-52 to Trinity University in the Cru's season opener Saturday night in Belton. The loss opened the Cru at 0-1 on the season while Trinity starts with a 1-0 record.
The Tigers jumped to an early lead with a 23-10 first-quarter score, shooting 46.7 percent in the first 10minutes of play. Both teams added 10 points in the second quarter for a 33-20 halftime mark before Trinity used a 16-point third quarter to gain advantage on UMHB. The Cru fought back in the fourth quarter, cutting the Tigers' lead to as few as six points late in the contest but was unable to catch the Tigers, giving Trinity the 59-52 victory.
Kendra Wynn led the Cru with 22 points while
Bridjai Chaney added 11 and
Jonelle Smith added nine.
Meghan Turner and Wynn led the Cru with two assists each. Wynn also led UMHB with three blocked shots, three steals and four baskets from the free-throw line. Chaney brought down a team-high 14 rebounds as UMHB out-rebounded the Tigers 57-46 in the contest. The Cru totaled 12 assists, five blocks and eight steals, shooting 27.5 percent in the match and 38.5 percent from the free-throw line.
Trinity's Elizabeth Balido led the Tigers with 14 points followed by Anecia Richardson with 12. Bryony Harris was the leading rebounder for Trinity, bringing down 12 rebounds. The Tigers totaled 14 assists, five blocks and 10 steals, shooting 32.2 percent in the contest, 29.2 percent from beyond the arc and 60.9 percent from the free-throw line.
UMHB returns to action Monday, November 16
th in a 6 p.m. match at Trinity University in San Antonio. The Cru returns home Tuesday, November 24
th in a 5:30 p.m. match against Southwestern University at the Mayborn Campus Center in Belton.
