Women’s Basketball falls to Our Lady of the Lake

BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team fell 88-71 to Our Lady of the Lake University Tuesday evening in Belton, dropping to 4-5 on the season as the Saints improved to 9-2.  
 
UMHB jumped to an early lead, shooting 45.8 percent in the first half and leading by as many as 12 points in the first two quarters without trailing the Saints. The Cru held a 35-31 lead at the break. But Our Lady of the Lake made a statement to open the third quarter, opening the half with an 18-2 run to lead by 12 points halfway through the quarter. The Cru was able to cut the Saints' lead to single digits just once more, trailing by double digits for the majority of the third and fourth quarters.
 
Kourtney Bevers led the Cru with 19 points while Kendra Wynn and Meghan Turner each added 10. Turner and Jonelle Smith led the Cru with three assists each as UMHB shot 40.3 percent in the contest. Bridjai Chaney was the leading rebounder for UMHB, bringing down seven as the Cru outrebounded the Saints 40-39. Wynn also recorded a team-high four steals en route to a team total of nine with 17 forced turnovers on the Saints.
 
Whitney Sandmann led the Saints with 21 points in the contest while Sonji Green was the leading rebounder with nine. UMHB shot 22.7 percent from beyond the arc and 51.6 percent from the free throw line while the Saints while 51.7 percent in the game, 42.1 percent from beyond the arc and 56.3 percent from the line.
 
UMHB returns to action Saturday, January 2nd in a 1 p.m. game at Louisiana College in Pineville. The Cru returns home Thursday, January 7th in a 5:30 p.m. start against LeTourneau University at the Mayborn Campus Center in Belton.
