PARKLAND, Wash. – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's soccer team was edged 1-0 by Whitworth University in the first of their three-game Washington road trip Thursday afternoon in Parkland, Wash.
Whitworth's Sam Engle gave the Pirates the winning advantage in the sixth minute, scoring off a free kick for a 1-0 lead. UMHB was unable to score, making eight shots with four on-goal.
Ben Hammonds led the Cru with two shots while six other athletes each added one. Defensively,
Javier Zaragoza took the loss in the net. Zaragoza allowed one goal and made seven saves in the contest, fighting off 10 second-half shots from the Pirates.
The Pirates ranked 13
th at the end of the 2014 season and were 14
th in the 2015 NSCAA Preseason Poll. UMHB returns to action on Friday, September 11
th in a 4:30 p.m. (PT) match against the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Wash.
