Volleyball beats No. 3 UT Dallas 3-2, advances to ASC championship match

BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team beat No. 3 UT Dallas 3-2 Friday evening in the 2016 American Southwest Conference Volleyball Championship Tournament Semifinals. The win improved UMHB to 20-9 and advanced them to the championship match while the Comets fell to 27-2 on the season.

 

UMHB pulled away in the first set, going on a 5-0 run to open the match with a 25-20 first-set win and giving the Comets just their second dropped set to an ASC opponent this season. UT Dallas evened the match with a 25-23 second-set win before the Cru took back the lead with a 27-25 third-set win. The Comets again evened the match with a 25-22 fourth-set win before the Cru rallied a 15-11 comeback fifth set for the 3-2 win.

 

Sarah Paolini led UMHB with 18 kills followed by Maddie Frerich with 14 and Abby Voskuil with 12. Natasha Evans led all athletes with 43 assists while Miranda Klein added 13 for UMHB. Defensively, Natasha Evans had a match-high 32 digs followed by Haleigh Evans with 21 and Voskuil with 19. UMHB totaled 63 kills on 205 attacks for a .200 hitting percentage, adding 118 digs and seven team blocks. Michelle Toro led the Comets with 15 kills as UT Dallas totaled 73 kills on 248 attacks for a .157 hitting percentage.

 

The win advanced UMHB to the ASC Volleyball Championship match on Saturday, Nov. 5th at 2 p.m. in the Mayborn Campus Center in Belton. The Comets moved to the loser's bracket and will play an elimination game on Saturday, Nov. 5th at 11 a.m. UT Dallas will play either Hardin-Simmons University or East Texas Baptist University with the winner advancing to the championship match against the Cru.
